What is SkyGRID?
SkyGrid is an advanced feature built into every PilotAware device since 2021. It allows each PilotAware unit to become an airborne rebroadcasting hub. Think of SkyGrid as an airborne AWACS system, but designed specifically for General Aviation use.
Why is SkyGrid Important?
Direct, Line of Sight (LOS) transmissions have a significant limitation when used alone in traditional electronic conspicuity (EC) systems. Aircraft flying at low altitudes or behind high terrain often have their transmissions blocked and so become undetected by other low-flying aircraft and FISOs. SkyGrid addresses this by extending the detection envelope vertically. Higher-flying PilotAware devices relay this detected traffic data, providing a clearer, more complete traffic picture. This improves situational awareness, enhances safety, and prepares for the future detection and relay of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) constrained to fly very low or in asymetric airspace.
How does SkyGRID work?
SkyGrid continuously checks that every PilotAware-equipped aircraft can receive data from an ATOM ground station. If it can’t, SkyGrid rebroadcasts traffic data from aircraft within a 10km range, ensuring the airspace fully visible to all. It also relays this aircraft’s information to ATOM stations and iGRID. Operating up to 8,000 feet, SkyGrid uses a unique arbitration system to determine which aircraft will handle the rebroadcast, ensuring optimal traffic coverage based on PilotAware-specific factors.
