What is Mode-S3D?
Mode-S/3D is our multi, designed to convert Mode-S signals into a complete position with both bearing and altitude. This is achieved using multilateration (MLAT) technology in collaboration with 360Radar. Previously, Mode-S transponders only provided altitude information—leaving a critical gap in traffic awareness. Mode-S/3D fills that gap by triangulating the exact position of Mode-S aircraft, giving you a more complete view of the skies.
Why is Mode-S3D Important?
Traditionally, Mode-S transponders have been limited, unable to broadcast bearing information. This made it difficult to fully determine the aircraft’s position. Mode-S/3D changes that by applying advanced MLAT techniques, pinpointing the aircraft’s position with impressive accuracy. In our tests, this system achieves a 95% accuracy rate within just four seconds.
How does Mode-S3D work?
Mode-S/3D constantly listens for Mode-S and ADS-B transmissions using a network of antennas. When a Mode-S pulse is detected, it is immediately timestamped. If the signal exceeds 8 seconds, it’s discarded as outdated to ensure you’re always working with the freshest, most accurate data. This process guarantees that aircraft positions are as precise as possible.
With a 95% accuracy rating after just four seconds, Mode-S/3D ensures you’re seeing up-to-date, reliable traffic information. Once the position is confirmed, the data is seamlessly integrated into the PilotAware network via iGRID and ATOM stations, creating a robust and comprehensive view of all air traffic in the area.
